In petrochemical olefin cracking workshops, raw materials such as ethylene and propylene have flash points below -100°C. In the 850°C high-temperature cracking furnaces and 3MPa high-pressure pipeline systems, even a tiny leak can form a flammable gas mixture within the explosive limit. When the wind speed in the workshop is below 1.2m/s, the diffusion speed of leaked gas is less than 0.5m/min, and a dangerous area with a volume concentration exceeding 2.7% (the lower explosive limit of ethylene) can be formed in a closed space within 10 minutes. When the wind speed exceeds 6m/s, the diffusion radius of the gas can expand to more than 300 meters per hour. The change of wind direction directly determines the scope of the dangerous area. A petrochemical enterprise once had a secondary explosion accident because the southeast wind directed the leaked propylene to the storage tank area.
The process reaction has strict requirements for environmental parameters. When the ambient temperature exceeds 38°C, the load of the cracking furnace cooling system increases by 20%, and the failure rate of the circulating water pump increases by 18%. When the relative humidity exceeds 75%, the corrosion rate of carbon steel pipes suddenly increases from 0.05mm/year to 0.2mm/year. Due to the excessive humidity in the plum rain season, a certain olefin plant experienced a 12% decrease in catalyst activity and an 8% decrease in ethylene yield. The VOCs concentration in the workshop is also directly related to the ventilation efficiency. When the wind speed is lower than 0.8m/s, the styrene concentration is likely to exceed the occupational exposure limit of 50mg/m3.
